A leading Global Coatings and Chemicals manufacturer is seeking a qualified Mechanical Engineer to join their production team in Durban. This is a pivotal opportunity for a technical professional to support a hazardous manufacturing environment by ensuring operational excellence and safety compliance. The ideal candidate will possess a University degree and 3 to 5 years of experience in the chemical, petrochemical, or similar high-risk industrial sectors. Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing the maintenance, repair, and optimization of mechanical systems within a hazardous chemical manufacturing environment.
  • Ensuring all engineering activities comply with strict health, safety, and environmental regulations relevant to the petrochemical or chemical industry.
  • Diagnosing mechanical failures and implementing long-term technical solutions to minimize production downtime.
  • Managing capital expenditure (CAPEX) projects from initial design and specification through to installation and commissioning.
  • Coordinating with production and quality teams to improve equipment reliability and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Performing regular equipment inspections and managing preventative maintenance schedules for pumps, pressure vessels, and piping systems.
  • Collaborating with external contractors and service providers to ensure specialized maintenance tasks are completed to standard.
  • Compiling technical reports and maintaining accurate documentation of all engineering modifications and safety audits.

Requirements:

  • Possessing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSc or BEng) from a recognized University.
  • Having 3 to 5 years of post-qualification experience specifically within chemical, petrochemical, or similar hazardous manufacturing environments.
  • Demonstrating a deep understanding of mechanical integrity and maintenance protocols for high-pressure systems and specialized industrial equipment.
  • Showing a proven track record of maintaining safety standards and operational efficiency in a high-risk production setting.
  • Displaying strong technical problem-solving skills and the ability to manage complex engineering projects from inception to completion.
  • Maintaining clear communication skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and external technical service providers.
  • Exhibiting the ability to work independently while ensuring all engineering documentation and compliance audits are kept up to date.
