Job Description

A leading player in the South African fishing and food processing industry is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Refrigeration Foreman to join their team. This is a pivotal role ensuring the integrity of the cold chain and the efficiency of large-scale industrial cooling systems.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance & Oversight: Manage the daily operation and maintenance of large-scale industrial refrigeration plants.

  • System Optimization: Monitor and adjust ammonia refrigeration systems to ensure peak performance and energy efficiency.

  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure all refrigeration activities strictly adhere to health and safety regulations, specifically regarding the handling and management of ammonia.

  • Team Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of technicians and artisans, scheduling shifts and overseeing technical workflows.

  • Fault Finding: Perform complex troubleshooting and rapid repairs to minimize downtime in a high-pressure production environment.

  • Spares Management: Manage inventory, procurement of specialized parts, and budget control for the refrigeration department.

Requirements

  • Experience: A minimum of 10 years post-qualification experience in an industrial refrigeration environment.

  • Technical Expertise: Extensive, hands-on experience with Ammonia ($NH_3$) systems is non-negotiable.

  • Qualifications: Relevant Trade Test (Refrigeration Mechanic) and advanced certifications in Ammonia Handling.

  • Industry Knowledge: Proven track record in the FMCG or Marine/Fishing sector is highly advantageous.

  • Leadership: Strong supervisory skills with the ability to manage technical teams and external contractors.

  • Reliability: Willingness to work overtime and attend to emergency call-outs to protect perishable stock.
