An established plastic manufacturing company is seeking a Senior Toolmaker with plastic manufacturing experience to joint their team in Johannesburg. The Senior Toolmaker will make, maintain, and repair the moulds used in plastic injection moulding. They ensure the moulds work correctly so production runs smoothly and efficiently. The job needs strong technical skills, precision machining, and attention to detail.
Responsibilities:
Operate and understand CAD/CAM systems (e.g., SolidWorks, Edgecam, Mastercam).
Diagnose and resolve mould defects, providing practical solutions.
Assist in project planning by breaking down complex jobs into manageable tasks.
Maintain and update records and digital systems (timesheets, inventory, mould history).
Monitor and manage daily workflows to align with the master production schedule.
Raise alerts when project delays or challenges (“Red Flag” issues) occur.
Use precision measuring tools (micrometers, callipers, verniers, gauges, CMMs) to ensure high standards.
Perform routine maintenance and upkeep of Toolroom machinery.
Dismantle, repair, and reassemble moulds accurately and efficiently.
Ensure work meets quality, dimensional, and functional standards.
Design and fabricate production jigs, fixtures, and templates as required.
Manufacture complete moulds from engineering drawings through validation and approval.
Inspect completed moulds and dies for defects in finish, fit, and function.
Apply correct feed rates, spindle speeds, and cutting depths to optimise CNC machining.
Conduct test runs of new or modified moulds, supporting production with setup and process parameters.
Operate and program EDM machines, with full knowledge of the EDM process.
Conduct quality checks on own work and peer work before release.
Follow all operating procedures and safety standards.
Verify correct operation of moulds across hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical systems before production release.
Requirements:
Qualified Toolmaker (Trade Test certified).
N2–N6 Mechanical or Engineering certificate.
Minimum 5 years of tooling experience, including CAD/CAM applications.
Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
Knowledge of:
- Pneumatics and hydraulic systems.
Electrical components and controls.
Working with fine tolerances and high-precision tooling.
Understanding material specifications and behaviour.
Heat treatment processes.
New mould builds, repairs, and modifications.
Fault diagnosis and resolution in moulds.
CNC programming, particularly with Edgecam and Mastercam.
Mould shutoffs, assembly/disassembly, and workflow tracking
